Now that it’s July, it’s made me reflect on some important issues… how it was truly our Fathers who founded this country and had their own businesses whether it was on a farm, or a mercantile or a blacksmith, or a single country doctor. If it were not for those men and small businesses, I, the small shop owner, would not be here today. None of our small stores would be here. So let us remember that. I ask you to make July the beginning of “Shop Small Stores”. There is an official campaign called “the 3/50 project” that I will tell you about later in this letter. I know many people like to shop at those “BIG BOX” stores, but you often have to fight crowds, and long lines, and oh gosh, can they be loud, and well, the customer service just isn’t there.
Here at Mulberry Cottage we LOVE our customers and it shows by how we care about how the shop looks for you, how we strive to carry unique items and very good prices and how customer service is key! I truly feel most if not all small storeowners feel that way and take pride in their store, for it’s their lives. We’re not chains and are not run by corporate decisions. With every decision we make, we always think of the customer first. So, to celebrate small stores, any time during the month of July, if you walk in to Mulberry Cottage and say the words “SHOP SMALL STORES”, we will give you 10% off your entire purchase (excluding sale, clearance, and Wee Forest Folk).
So now let me tell you about “the 3/50 project”. This is a project that focuses on “saving the brick and mortars our nation is built on”. When you read about this project it’ll make perfect sense to you and actually enlighten you on some important information. Did you know that for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores like Mulberry Cottage, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays in the local economy. Spend it online and nothing comes home.
This project’s goal is to help keep shops just like Mulberry Cottage stay in business and to help the local economy’s with of course the help from you our wonderful customers. I urge you to please go the website and read all about it or stop by the shop and pick up a flyer. It is truly a project worth it’s gold in supporting! All of us here at Mulberry Cottage, and I know you do too, want Mulberry Cottage to be around for a very long time. I also want my fellow independent small store owners to be around for a long time too… I don’t want us all to crumble away while the Big Box stores seem to take over the country that was founded by our wonderful Fathers many years ago with a dream that started with small businesses!
Our Independence Day Celebration was a great success. Thanks to all of you who attended! Now for this month at Mulberry Cottage, on Saturday July 10th and Sunday July 11th we are having a big SIDEWALK SALE and Lemonade Days! For the Sidewalk Sale, we have some great discounting! You’ll find great items from 30% to 60% OFF. For the Lemonade Days everything inside the store that has any yellow on it is 15% off! This was a fun event last year. It’s like a treasure hunt looking around the shop to see what you can get that has yellow on it! For this event we will be serving some goodies to taste and of course… some refreshing lemonade! You don’t want to miss this! In addition, our neighboring shops (Cookin’ Stuff, Ace Hardware, etc.) are also joining in and also having their sidewalk sales on the same day!
I also want to let you know that we’re now carrying in the shop one of our favorite magazines, Romantic Homes! We will have our first magazine ad in the September issue in the “Events” section. Come in soon and get the August issue. This issue is selling fast and we just got it in! For those of you with a sweet-tooth we have also got in some yummy taffy that will tantalize your taste buds! The girls and I are having a very hard time not eating all of it! We also just got in the shop some beautiful and wonderfully scented candles by Candle in the Wind. New Vera is on the way too… yes the beautiful new Fall line of Vera Bradley should be arriving by mid-July. Watch your e-mail because I will let you know when it’s in! Don’t forget either about every Wednesday being Senior Discount day… remember you wonderful seniors get 10% off every Wednesday!
You know here at the Cottage we always have something going on. Several of you have said to me that you think Huell Howser should come to Mulberry Cottage, well we agree! We are in the process to see if we can make this happen. We have at the shop a petition that is filling up very well but we still need more signatures! Once I get a fair amount, then I’ll be e-mailing Mr. Howser with a letter I’ve composed to him, which I think is a very good letter and compelling idea for the reason why he should come to our shop. I will also be attaching the petition so he sees that all of you loyal Mulberry Cottage fans want to see him as well! So come in sign the petition and join our venture!

Mulberry Cottage is celebrating another wonderful year! Happy 19th Anniversary to Mulberry Cottage! There’s so much to be thankful for, especially for all of you who still love coming to the Cottage. You’re the reason Mulberry Cottage is able to celebrate it’s 19th year! I want to thank all the Mulberry Gals, they’re a very special part of this shop, and of course my husband Mitch, my great partner who is so much help. To celebrate, we’re having a one-day only Anniversary Sale on Sat., June 5th! We’ve picked many of our favorite things and put them on sale for this day. We’ll be serving refreshments and sampling delicious foods, plus a delicious cake made and decorated by our very talented cake maker, Michelle Vanlerberghe our Director of Display. Michelle’s cakes are so wonderful! Besides the great sales and tasty treats, anyone who comes to the Anniversary Event will receive a special coupon with any purchase. So you won’t want to miss this one day only Sale and a fun day to come to Mulberry Cottage and say Happy Anniversary!
There’s never any June Gloom at Mulberry Cottage. Nope, it’s not allowed! This month, besides being our Anniversary, it’s also the beginning of summer, Flag Day, Father’s Day, Graduations, and our Independence Day Celebration! To welcome summer, we have put Pacifica candles, perfumes and body butters on sale. These are great summer scents. For Flag Day, all of our flags are on sale from garden, to beach, and to our good old Red, White & Blue. There’s nothing like a Flag… I love to hang flags outside my home and of course here at the shop! Our motto here is “Hang a flag from your porch or balcony and show your home is a happy one!” So come pick your favorite flag, display it proudly so all who pass by will smile when they see it hanging outside your home! You’ll also find a great selection of gifts for your graduating boys, girls, and young adults.
Ahh Father’s Day… June 20th is the Day we celebrate our Dad’s! Even though Mulberry Cottage is the perfect place to shop for mom, …and it certainly is. It’s also a great place to shop for Dad too. Wake Dad up with the smell of a delicious homemade breakfast on Father’s Day. We have yummy pancake and waffle mixes, with oh so tasty maple butter or blueberry dollop from Brown Family Farm. I truly feel that all dad’s have a little cowboy in them; the man of the house always there to protect his homestead, the man that was the bucking bronco when you were little, and the strong man you look up to and love. Get him a magnificent Mill Creek Studios western statue as a unique gift for Father’s Day. Any dad would want one in their home, study or office. We also have very unique items perfect for the sports fan of years gone by. Try a vintage football, baseball or fly fishing clock, or a very unique golf lamp for the golf lover. My absolute favorite item, which I would give my dad if were still alive, is a big framed picture titled “Legends of the Fall” featuring a Big Bear in the midst of fall Leaves. We all love this gorgeous picture. So if your dad loves nature, come get it quick because we only have one!
Independence Day is almost here and you know we always do our best to have each holiday represented in a very special way. For the 4th of July, we have very unique red, white & blue treasures to show your patriotism and decorate your home for your family gatherings around our country’s birthday! We have some wonderful vintage red, white & blue flags and buntings, unique plaques, and other wonderful vintage treasures to take you back in time and remind you of our great nation’s history. Don’t forget some tasty Robert Rothschild salsas, dips and spreads would be a perfect addition to any yummy cook out! I also hope you come to our Independence Day Celebration on Sat June 26th. We’ll have some yummy food sampling and refreshments, a special red, white & blue sale and a free gift for the 1st 25 customers with a $25 min. purchase, plus and your name gets in a raffle for a $50 gift certificate! So come by and get in the Spirit of America!
So you see there’s a lots going on this month. Nope, no June Gloom here! I want to take this opportunity to wish all you Dad’s out there a Very Happy Father’s Day, and we’re thankful for all you do for us. I miss you Dad, but I know you’re watching over me, and that makes my heart happy!

April Showers bring May flowers; so what does May flowers bring? The celebration of Mother’s Day! What a wonderful opportunity to let our mothers and grandmothers know how much we love them and how thankful we are for what they do and continue to do each day of our lives! I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that Mulberry Cottage has the perfect gifts for mom and grandma. To assist you, we have some special events this month!
Our Garden Party is on Saturday, May 1st. We have a special gift for the first 25 customers with a $35 min. purchase. We’ll be serving refreshments and sampling some tasty foods. Also, this day begins our Vera Bradley raffle which runs from May 1st through May 8th. You’ll get a free raffle ticket with each $35 min. purchase, and there are 2 chances to win some wonderful prizes from Vera! Stop by the shop for a sneak peak. The winning tickets will be drawn Saturday evening, and the lucky winners will be notified that evening so they’ll have time to pick up their prizes on Sunday for a wonderful Mother’s Day gift for Mom or Grandma. But gosh, you might want to keep these for yourself. ϑ We have other fun things happening at the Garden Party so stop in for fun, great savings, tasty treats, and just a great day to get your shopping done for mom and grandma. And hey, you could always bring them with you… and maybe they’ll give you hints on what they want.
Just in case you’re not sure what to get them, let me help with some wonderful ideas. We have everyone’s favorite Camille Beckman hand therapy or body creams (these typically sell out at Mother’s Day so come in quick for the best selection). We also have beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings, Greenleaf sachets and shower gels, and Heritage Lace (every mom and grandma loves Heritage Lace). And our new arrivals, some adorable vintage hankies and hankie pillowcases… just beautiful, and of course wonderful linens from April Cornell just to mention a few treasures. I have to say my favorite gift items would be one of our teacups, with Davidson’s Tea, a cozy throw, and one of our new tea-time or inspirational books, and of course give mom or grandma the “time” to curl up in her favorite chair, with her tea and cozy throw and a wonderful book… Just what she needs! We currently have Wee Forest Folk, Timeworks Clocks, and Heritage Lace online. Soon you’ll find Earth Rugs and many other items that will be added! These lines have been very popular special orders with our customers. Now, you can preview the whole assortment and place orders online or by phone. This is very exciting. We have many out of state fans of Mulberry Cottage who have been asking when we’ll be selling online. Well… now it’s happening. We even have customers in Europe! This thrills us because it adds yet another way we can better serve our wonderful loyal customers! I want to close by saying, besides May being a special month that we celebrate Mother’s Day, I also celebrate my mom’s birthday this month, May 22nd. My mom left this earth many years ago but her love, warmth and smile are with me everyday. She raised me well and I thank her and love her for that, so Happy Birthday Mom and Happy Mother’s Day I miss you and grandma. I love you both. I also wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of you who are moms and grandmas.
